Five leaderships qualities you should look for when hiring a manager

Hiring a good manager can make or break your team. Good managers are worth their weight in gold, and finding one is hard work. If you're lucky enough to have hired a great manager, then it's time to start working on ways to keep them happy so that they stay on board for many years.

If you're still looking for your perfect candidate, here are five qualities of a good leader so that you know what to look for when hiring someone new:

Ability to delegate and hand out responsibility

Delegation is a sign of trust, respect and confidence. It shows that you believe in your team members' abilities and you have faith that they will do the right thing. It demonstrates their potential to grow beyond what you can provide them with on your own.

If a manager does not trust their team well enough to delegate then they are effectively stifling growth within their team, which hinders productivity and misses out on opportunities for growth from others.

A positive attitude

A positive attitude is an essential quality to look for in a manager, as they will be leading your team by example. A manager with a positive attitude can motivate and inspire their team, which creates a positive work environment that benefits everyone involved.

This doesn't mean that you should hire someone who always smiles—you want to make sure you hire someone who can keep things light while also being able to step in when necessary and take charge of situations that require it.

Ability to inspire

An inspiring leader can be someone who inspires other people to do better. This means that they can inspire their team members and colleagues to achieve more than they think they can, or even want to achieve.

While it’s true that everyone has a different way of viewing the world, being able not only to inspire but also motivate others is something you should look for when hiring a manager.

Strong work ethic

  • A good work ethic is one that is focused on achieving results and productivity.

  • There are a few ways you can measure the quality of your employees' work ethic:

  • Check their performance in terms of how well they do their job, compared to other workers in similar positions at similar companies (e.g., you might look at how many clients an employee has or how much revenue they generate)

  • Observe whether or not your employees are following company rules when performing tasks (e.g., if there's a rule against eating lunch at their desks, what does it look like when you walk by?)

  • If someone has a bad work ethic, they might be unwilling to do any sort of extra work beyond what they're already expected to do because it could make them seem lazy or unproductive in some way

Accountability

Accountability is the ability to accept responsibility for your actions. It's a key leadership quality and one that you should look for when hiring a manager.

Accountability is also a sign of maturity and discipline, which makes it an important attribute in any leader or employee. If someone can't own up to their mistakes or shortcomings, they're not likely to do well in leadership roles because they won't be able to motivate themselves as much as someone who can accept responsibility for their actions. This doesn't mean that you should hire people who constantly blame others; what it means is that no matter what happens on the job, employees need to take ownership over the results instead of trying to pass the buck or make excuses.
