Roma Black Takes on Plastic Free July 2022

Plastic Free July is a key initiative of the Plastic Free Foundation, encouraging individuals and organisations to go plastic-free for the month of July.

Last year, 140 million people participated in the initiative and a total of 2.1 million tonnes of waste was saved in just one month through plastic-free swaps.

With over 300 million tons of plastic being produced every year, Roma Black is taking action by committing to go plastic-free this July. Along with taking on the challenge to refuse single-use plastic, we’re also using this month as an opportunity to learn about the impact of plastic pollution and give back to the community with meaningful action.

Swapping Disposables for Reusables in the Workplace

To kick off the month, we’ve conducted a single-use plastic audit and identified areas that we, as a business, can improve on. This includes:

  • Swapping our current milk cartons for glass options with Milk & More

  • Swapping bin liners with newspaper and compostable bag options

  • Swapping snacks and drinks with plastic-free alternatives

  • Swapping celebration decorations (such as balloons) for plastic-free alternatives (made of rubber rather than foil)

  • Encouraging recruiters to use reusable Tupperware over cling film at lunch

We’re really excited to see how these alternatives work for us, and if there are any that we can continue to use past the end of July.

Roma Black Beach Clean

To take meaningful action on our values on sustainability, a group of the Roma Black team is participating in the Final Straw Foundation’s Emsworth beach clean on the 13th of July.

We’ll be out there cleaning up plastic waste that has washed up on Emsworth beach, seeing first-hand what can happen to the plastic that is tossed away without a second thought.

The team are really looking forward to contributing positively to the environment and our local community.

Plastic-Free Breakfast Morning

What better opportunity to bring everyone together over (plastic-free) coffee and cake to discuss the impact of plastic pollution on our planet?

We’ll be hosting a plastic-free breakfast morning to give the team a chance to learn more about plastic waste, using excellent resources from the Plastic Free Foundation, WWF and the film A Plastic Ocean (Craig Leeson, 2016) starring industry experts like David Attenborough.

This month will be a great opportunity for our business to learn, discuss and take the next steps in tackling plastic pollution.
